Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ Rating: G (Good)
It is time for a confession. I did not know that this cigar was made by My Father Cigars. That is sort of embarrassing for me since I tend to love their cigars but at least you can know that this review is without bias.
This cigar is named for the father son duo behind My Father Cigars, Jose and Jaime, and is supposedly the cigar that really launched their brand.
The cigar feels great in hand. Good weight, construction, and smell. Upon taking a quick dry draw I get notes of earth, dust, and hay.
Right out of the gate I get some bitterness combined with peppery spices. I have to admit; I was feeling pretty certain that I was going to be struggling to finish this cigar but that all quickly changed. After a few minutes the flavors started to change drastically to become a little sweeter. I started to get little notes of honey and coffee with some dust undertones. I know it sounds like a weird combination but it actually balanced out quite nicely.
The second third of the cigar started to trend back to the flavors I perceived before it was lit. It was becoming very earthy again with flavors of hay and leather becoming more prominent. The medium body of the cigar was pairing nicely with my bourbon at this point.
Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ Final Third:
The final bit of this cigar was still a bit earthy and leathery. If you have read any of my reviews in the past you probably know already that the last third is my least favorite due to the fact that cigars always seem to be a little harsher at said point for my palate. Not this cigar. It seemed to maintain its flavors up until the very end. That’s not to say that it did not get stronger at the end but that it was manageable for me.
If you take away anything from this review let it be one word: Earthy. To me the cigar maintained flavors of earth, dust, and hay with some curve balls in there for the hour-and-a-half it took me to smoke it. If you are a fan of My Father Cigars then you will not be disappointed (I rarely am by them) but it was not my favorite cigar they have made. To me I am kind of perplexed by this because the cigar maintains a 90+ rating depending on who you get your ratings from. I would definitely recommend the cigar to your veteran smoker but would probably not recommend it to a beginner since it does tend to be a medium to full body cigar.
I have one more in my humidor that I want to smoke and might even provide an update to this post should things be different. Stay tuned!
