Second verse same as the first. Except different. The CLE Prieto is the stronger compliment to the CLE Chele. In fact, the two cigars are so alike in the wrapping and presentation that they are like brother and sister. CLE seemed to make the two cigars for those who like mild and strong offerings.  The CLE Prieto, much like the Chele, is a break from the normal CLE offerings since these two cigars are made in Nicaragua. These cigars have a presentation that is also different from the CLE norm and they consist of a tissue paper that is branded wrapped around ¾ of the cigar along with a shiny silver band. CLE really wanted to make these stand out from their line of their cigars.

CLE was founded by Christian Luis Eiroa in 2012 after he decided to go out on his own using his wealth of knowledge that he has amassed since the age of 8 when he began working around tobacco. He also worked for Camacho Cigars where he helped launch the Camacho Corojo. Once Camacho was purchased, Christian felt it was time for him to go out on his own and start his own company, CLE.

Pre-Light:

If you have read any of my reviews before then you probably already know that I am skeptical of maduros or bold cigars.

Holding the Prieto in my hand-made gave me a preconceived notion that I probably was not going to like it. CLE is definitely aspiring that the construction of the cigar be that of a premium cigar and I would say they definitely achieved just that.

First Third:

The cigar started off with a little bit of salty sweet action with the saltiness lingering a little more than the sweet. I could definitely taste earthy notes of wood with some coffee and chocolate flavors as well. The strength of the cigar hovered around medium for this duration.

Second Third:

As the cigar transitioned in to the second third, the coffee flavor definitely lingered but now I was picking up a little bit of pepper and spice. The combination was very well-balanced and not off-putting at all. The strength of the cigar began to increase slightly as it began to become a little bit stronger.

Final Third: As I began to wrap up this smoke I thought I would be overpowered with a strong body but I really wasn’t. It managed to stay around a medium-to-strong bodied cigar. It also seemed to mellow out just a little as the pepper and spice flavors faded away to more of the wood flavor I was picking up in the first third. The coffee flavor never seemed to go away and the chocolate flavor seemed to come back in the mix as well.

CLE Prieto Overall:

I would not have picked up this cigar by choice had I been looking for something in the cigar store because it has the appearance of a strong smoke. Fortunately, I was given this to review and I have been shown that looks can be deceiving. This smoke, while probably still enjoyed by those who like a strong cigar, can definitely be enjoyed by those who have a more medium bodied cigar palate. I would definitely recommend this cigar to all smokers and I would say that it pairs well with coffee or with a nice bourbon.
